“When the cities are good for the children, they will be good for all” is a phrase from Professor Francesco Tonucci, that you have applied for your project, THE CITY OF CHILDREN.
Who is Francesco Tonucci?
Francesco Tonucci was born in Fano, Italy, is a teacher, writer, researcher, and advocate of freedom for the development of the children, however at a very early age, he noticed that the events that occur in childhood are fundamental to the development of the children, because they depend in a large percentage of their interaction with the city.
How was born the project “The city of children?
In 1991, in Fano, Italy the city council with the support of Francesco Tonucci held an event dedicated to children, where it carried out various activities that revolved around the idea of engaging children in the policy, the last activity that was performed was to close the streets to traffic of cars to let the kids play in them, thanks to the success of the event it was decided to repeat but Francesco Tonucci accept only on the condition of turning it into an ongoing initiative and not a one-time event, thus was born “The City of the Children”.
The City of children
The city of children is the result of the study of thought and behavior of the children in their different environments (family, school, and society) the goal is to learn to see with the eyes of a child.
Today, 32 years after the first event 200 cities around the world participate in this project.
One of the first activities consisted in collecting 30 children aged 8 to 10 years of various schools of the city of Fano, which, once a year went with the authorities to report their needs and to accuse all the abuses that lived in their environments.
Thanks to these audiences got the kids have where to play, that they could be safe to walk to school which also resulted in safe spaces for pedestrian traffic for the adults.
The cities are conceived, designed and executed so that the children can be safe, play and be comfortable, to be cities with quality spaces for society as a whole.

Francesco Tonucci says creating spaces (parks), focusing on games for children is not the solution, since the development of the children, not only it is in these spaces.
The ideal thing is that the whole environment is designed for your safety and development, the problem is not. 1 is that we have created cities by focusing on the cars, when they should be designed to society.
In conclusion, we must take the children's ideas as a parameter for the design of cities, designing, and developing through their eyes and voices.
